Spotlight on Claire Waterfield

Hello Claire Waterfield

Hi Claire, tell us what is your business called?
Grey Feather Photography

How did you come up with your business name?
Birds are a particular passion of mine and so I wanted something based around this. Grey Feather was chosen in memory of our pet African Grey parrot who was a part of the family for 10 years and we sadly lost a couple of years ago.

Where are you based?
Aberystywyth

What is your craft?
Photography

Where do you craft?
I take photos wherever, and whenever I can

How long have you been taking photographs?
Since 2006 where a holiday to Scotland inspired me to take up photography.

Have you specialised in any specific field?
Im not sure I have a speciality at the moment but I do hope to go into pet portraiture in the future.

What other crafts/skill do you have?
Not many!

Have you got any special qualifications or are you self- taught?
I am mostly self taught through books and practice although I have studied a short course in Photography with the Open University.

What inspires you?
The natural world.

What keeps you going?
The feeling of pride when people give lovely feedback on my photographs as well as my love of taking them.

What others artists inspire you?
I spend a long time browsing various websites such as redbubble looking through other peoples work. I also have a collection of photo postcards that I have collected which I like to keep on display as inspiration.

What is your all-time favourite creation?
My Starling prints print as they are 2 of my favourite images and ones that I am very proud of. They also show the beauty in nature that is all around us.

What do you do if something you photograph doesn't turn out how you envisaged it?
Try again another day.

Do you do this full-time, part-time or just as an hobby? Just as a hobby.

Does the Welsh landscape/Culture inspire you?
Definitely, Aberystwyth is beautiful with its beaches and colourful seafront, its a lot more beautiful than living in a grey town miles from the sea!

 What is your favourite colour?
That would be green.

Does it feature a lot in your work?
It certainly does! No surprise as most of images are that of nature.

Do you have a favourite subject?
Birds definitely, I spend a lot of time watching the birds on my terrace waiting for the day when something really unique or unusual shows up!

Do you have any pets? Do theyhelp?
I have 2 cats, Cali & Hamish. They help by keeping me smiling and have gotten me through some difficult times.
They also feature in some of my products and a LOT of photographs

Where have your items been sold to?
UK mostly. At craft fairs and online.

What is the most unusual/furthest place your items have gone?
The furthest place would be the USA.

Do you think you value your work enough- do you find pricing hard?
I do find pricing hard, I like to keep prices low so as not to put buyers off but at the same time I dont want this to give the impression that my products are not high quality.

Do you get together with fellow artists?
Occasionally.

Can you remember what the first thing you sold was?
This postcard:

Do you remember what it felt like, selling your work?
I felt a huge sense of achievement even though it was just a simple postcard!

What gets in the way of your artistic endeavours?
My health problemsI was diagnosed with M.E in 2010.

What is your favourite tool?
My camera of course! I use a Nikon D60 and various lenses for my photography.

Anyone else in your family or a close friend who enjoys crafting?
No, it is just me and my camera.

Can we find you on Pinterest, Tumblr or other site?
I have an account on RedBubble where a large selection of my images can be seen, they are also available to purchase as cards and prints http://www.redbubble.com/people/greyfeatherphot/portfolio

Any other links you like us to look you up?
